Introducing Kyle and Will: our new developers

It’s been a busy period of recruitment for We Create Digital. We’d like to introduce you to two of our recent starters: Will and Kyle.

They’re both undertaking a one-year placement with WCD as part of their Computer Science undergraduate degree at the University of Essex.

We wanted to find out a little more about them, so we decided to sit them down for a round of quick-fire questions.

Tell us about your career to date… how did you end up here at WCD?

I have been in full-time education before coming to work at WCD; and still am whilst I work here. All of my education choices have revolved around a certain area of expertise, computer programming - this has always been my biggest passion. Working at WCD is contributing to my degree in computer science as my placement year, which is valuable experience when looking for a job post University.

What are you most looking forward to working on here?

I look forward to the experience offered by others who work here, which I can learn a lot from and have already. Furthermore, I enjoy working on interesting and big projects, which come very often, and look forward to working on even more in the coming future.

Windows or Mac?

Historically I have always been a Windows person and I still am a little more inclined to go with Windows when given the chance. However, since working on Macs for the whole time I’ve been working here I can see the benefits of the operating system from a working perspective, but recreationally I’ll stick with windows.

What do you like to do outside of work?

When I’m not working I enjoy gaming very much and have recently built myself a new PC (hence being a Windows guy) to play some of the newest releases. Additionally, I love films and TV shows and try to keep up-to-date with the latest shows and movies.

Favourite sports team/film/band?

My favourite band has got to be ‘The Killers’.

Tell us about your career to date… how did you end up here at WCD?

So far I have been in full time education since I can remember and will be spending my third year at We Create Digital.

I knew that I wanted to do a placement from the very start of my degree; while a good degree can be a very valuable asset to have in the labour market, gaining practical experience is crucial. Initially, I didn’t quite know what type of placement I wanted to do before I took a module called ‘Web Application Programming’. This module allowed me to combine my programming skills with web design to create well-functioning and professional looking websites.

I think this placement will provide me with invaluable experiences to take back to University, as well as future jobs.

What are you most looking forward to working on here?

I am looking forward to publishing some of our projects we’ve been working on.

For instance, I can’t wait to fully unveil Omniowl, a bespoke university course search service, to the public. As a student myself, I appreciate how beneficial this service will be to anyone considering to go to university.

I’m very glad to have the opportunity to work on this project, I wish this website would have existed when I was considering university options at sixth form.

Windows or Mac?

Personally, I prefer Mac over Windows any day of the week. I use a MacBook Pro for work and have a MacBook Air for personal use. Nonetheless, I really want to build a PC to play all the latest games - including VR content - at the best quality possible. Until then, Mac will continue to remain my first choice.

Favourite Film?

There are many great films but I would say that my favourite film has to be “The Pursuit of Happyness”.

I find the story very thought-provoking, particularly as the viewer is able to see the struggle of someone from their point of view rather than as an outsider.

Will Smith played the role superbly - portraying the life of a man struggling to realise the American dream while attempting to protect his son from the harsh realities of the path to creating a better future for themselves.

If you won £1 million, what would you do with the money?

I would first buy a new car before putting a good portion of the remaining money away for a rainy day.

I’d look to make some shrewd investments to potentially generate a return on my money and give me another option to fall back on.
